YouLab
Section titled “YouLab”YouLab is intelligent system with a radical premise: you should control what AI “knows” about you. Unlike black-box AI products where personalization happens invisibly, YouLab makes AI context transparent, version-controlled, and user-approved.
Exceptional work requires showing your process. As a carpenter and student, handing off a project means shop drawings. Measurements. A paper trail. If something is wrong, you can trace it back.
AI personalization has no paper trail.
The best tutors and counselors don’t just tell students what to write; they help students discover what to write. They take notes. They notice patterns. And crucially, they share those observations: “I notice you light up when you talk about robotics but go quiet when you mention pre-med. What’s that about?”
That transparency is the whole point. A tutor who secretly profiles you is surveilling, not teaching.
How it Works
Section titled “How it Works”When our AI tutor learns something about you, it writes it down in a “memory block” - a readable markdown file. Every change is version-controlled (think Google Docs history, but for AI context). And here’s the key part: when the AI wants to update what it knows about you, it has to ask permission first.
The tutor proposes an edit. You see exactly what changed and why. You approve it, modify it, or reject it.
Most AI personalization happens in the model’s weights: invisible, non-portable, owned by whoever runs the model. YouLab stores context as text. Plain text you can read, export, and take with you.
This means:
- Transparency: See everything the AI thinks it knows about you
- Portability: Switch models without losing your context
- Autonomy: No silent updates, no hidden profiling
The best human tutors already work this way. They’re transparent about their observations and invite correction. AI tutoring should do the same.
Our First Course
Section titled “Our First Course”We’re starting with college essay coaching and self-authorship, partly because its a space I have many strong opinions about, partly because it’s a domain where the stakes are high and generic AI actively hurts student outcomes.
The system guides students through self-discovery before they write a single word. Strengths assessments. Time inventories. Pattern recognition. The AI tutor takes notes along the way, building a picture of who you are and what matters to you.
But unlike a black-box AI, you can always pull up those notes. Disagree with something? Change it. Notice the AI is stuck on an outdated detail? Delete it.
Your context. Your control.
The Bet We’re Making
Section titled “The Bet We’re Making”We believe strongly that the future of AI isn’t just about smarter models; it’s about better relationships between humans and AI systems. That means transparency by default. It means users having a genuine voice in how we are modeled.
Most AI companies are betting that users don’t care about the contextual integrity of their profiles. That convenience will always win over control.
We’re betting they’re wrong.
